The US diesel map splits hard this week.

The EIA weekly retail diesel survey printed the national average at $6.199 a gallon for the week ending October 5\. That is down from $6.382 the week before. What a driver actually pays depends on which district the truck is parked in, and the distance between the top and the bottom of that map is the story.

California sits at $8.082 a gallon. The Lower Atlantic sits at $5.699\. Same country, same on-highway grade, and those two receipts are not the same purchase. For a long-haul operator that is a routing decision before it is a headline.

## Where US diesel prices this week run highest

EIA prices diesel in [ten districts](https://dashboard.northernmilemedia.com/us-diesel/?ref=northernmilemedia.com), not fifty states. The district a load runs through sets the pump price more than the state line does.

| District | Diesel, USD per gallon |
| ------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| US national average | 6.199 |
| California | 8.082 |

The expensive end is western and coastal. [California](https://dashboard.northernmilemedia.com/us-diesel/california/?ref=northernmilemedia.com), the West Coast reading and the two Atlantic districts beneath it hold the top of the table. The cheap end sits on the Gulf and along the southern Atlantic seaboard.

Fill the same tank in California and in the Lower Atlantic and the two receipts do not match. Nothing about the truck changed. The district did. That is why the district map matters more than a single national figure while a lane is still being priced.

## The Canadian half of the same week

North of the line the unit changes. Natural Resources Canada prints diesel in cents per litre. The EIA prints in dollars per gallon. Litres against gallons, cents against dollars. The two readings cannot be laid side by side as one number.

NRCan printed its own map on Tuesday, October 6\. The national average sits at 259.1 cents a litre. Quebec is dearest at 290.9\. The Northwest Territories is cheapest at 222.1\. The spread between them is 68.8 cents a litre, and that figure reshapes a fuel plan faster than any national headline does.

The expensive end of the Canadian map is coastal, led by Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon and British Columbia. The cheap ground runs through the middle of the country. Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan all print under the national average, and the Northwest Territories is the cheapest market on the board.

## The currency is doing quiet work

*The Canadian dollar against the US dollar, recent observations.*

The Bank of Canada printed 1.4271 Canadian dollars to the US dollar on October 9, with the loonie weakening 0.2 per cent. Crude is priced in US dollars, so a softer loonie raises what the same barrel costs a Canadian carrier at the pump. It also shrinks the room a cross-border rate has to cover, which is a conversation for the rate sheet rather than the fuel desk.

## The border finished the week calm

![Current commercial wait times at CBSA-reported crossings.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/76/c476aa94-d18a-4e60-a7a9-d463d9af9e17/content/images/size/w720/format/webp/2026/10/border-rank-5.png)

*Current commercial wait times at CBSA-reported crossings.*

CBSA reported delays at four crossings. Peace Bridge led at 13 minutes, then Ambassador Bridge at 10, Queenston-Lewiston Bridge at 7 and Pacific Highway Crossing at 5\. Five more read clear, including Blue Water Bridge, Lacolle, Coutts-Sweetgrass, Emerson-Pembina and Thousand Islands Bridge.

A queue is fuel burned at zero miles and hours the next load does not get back. The [Ambassador Bridge](https://dashboard.northernmilemedia.com/border-wait-times/ambassador-bridge/?ref=northernmilemedia.com) is the crossing most Ontario fleets plan their day around, and 10 minutes there is a good day.

One disruption to flag. BC Highway 6 near Needles Ferry closes overnight from Thursday, October 15 through Monday, October 19, between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM PDT, for required maintenance.

## What to do with it

Price the district, not the country. Where a lane allows a fill on the cheap end of the US map, [Texas](https://dashboard.northernmilemedia.com/us-diesel/texas/?ref=northernmilemedia.com) and the Lower Atlantic are where the receipts come down. On the Canadian side, the prairie provinces do the same work.

Check the crossing clock before a tight delivery, not after. The distance between a 13 minute Peace Bridge and a 5 minute Pacific Highway is a planning variable, not trivia.

Run your own numbers. Cost per kilometre is your burn rate multiplied by the price you paid, and only one half of that is published here. The [fuel cost calculator](https://dashboard.northernmilemedia.com/fuel-cost-calculator/?ref=northernmilemedia.com) takes your own figure.

That is the shape of US diesel prices this week. One national average, ten districts, and a wide distance between the two ends of the map. Every district and every crossing sits live on the dashboard, and your own lane is one calculation away from being a number a dispatcher can use.
